HOW IT BEGAN
ABOUT THE BOOK
The fish with the hat is a character based on the piece of art that Piper created in kindergarton. She brought the picture home and said, "This is the fish with the hat."
I somewhat jokingly said, "That sounds like a book to me."
She turned around and, with excitement in her eyes, said, "Daddy, can we write a book?" And so our idea developed.
She envisioned the fish with the hat as a very wise, somewhat grumpy yet subtly humorous individual. After each of his contacts, Piper wnated him to provide wholesome, encouraging advice that could be incorporated into daily life. She wanted a Dr. Seuss feel, with simple rhyming throughout, directed at the early elementary level.
Per Piper's instructions, when reading the lines said by the fish with the hat, you should use a Gruff voice.
